                                                HOCUTT HAPPENINGS

November 2008

Y a Aquel que es poderoso para hacer todas las cosas mucho más abundantemente de lo que pedimos o entendemos, según el poder que actúa en nosotros, [sea la gloria]. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, [be the glory]. Efesios 3:20

STORY OF EISTEN

Our first encounter with Eisten was in June 2008, in the village of Cajacay, where Keith was host to the Bell Shoals Medical team (Tampa FL). The local doctor had coordinated with the authorities in the smaller, mountain villages to get their people to the med clinic. When leaving home the truck from Huayllapampa was too full to pass the police check-point, so several people had to dismount, thinking to board again on the other side. The truck did not stop for them, so they walked an additional 8 hours to be seen by the doctors.

Francisca and her son, Eisten, (below, middle of photo) arrived late in the afternoon, but were seen by the doctors. Immediately, one of the med team told Keith that before she left Tampa a surgeon had told her that if she found facial problems, take photos and examine; and if he could he would be delighted to do reconstructive surgery. God had prepared the way!

Keith told the medical personnel that it is rare that the mountain folks have the necessary documents to get passports. As Francisca was questioned, she informed them that they not only had birth certificates for each family member, but she also had a marriage certificate!

We began the task of obtaining the necessary documents. We visited Huayllapampa for the first time with Doctora Tatiana (far right in photo below ) and gave information to the family for their first visit to Lima.

With the aid of our mission office, Julian, Francisca, and Eisten were escorted through Peru Immigration Office and obtained Peruvian passports for mom and son.

Through communication with Bell Shoals Baptist Church, Tampa, we continued the process and pursued the task of getting VISA appointments at the US Embassy. This took much work on Keith’s part to obtain letters from the church, the local doctor, the US hospital and surgeon that would substantiate the need for the trip to the States.

Our 2nd meeting with Eisten and family was 14 October in Cajacay to get data for Keith to make application for US VISAs. While we talked and filled in the application forms, Joshua and Eisten played with Joshua’s toys and sketch book and markers.

(Joshua and Eisten)                                    (Eisten, Francisca, and Julian)

We completed the applications and on return to Huaraz, Keith made appointments via Internet for three.

Our friend, Gladys Rojas, had translated for the medical team in June and agreed to accompany Francisca and Eisten to the States as their translator. When Keith had the official date of the Embassy appointment, we made our 3rd trip to visit the family, again in Huayllapampa.

Two days early, Carolyn called the village phone to get a message to Julian that we were coming, Monday, 20 October, to give them documents for the 22 October appointment.

The last 32 kilometers are tough, taking 1½ hours and when we arrived, none of the family was in town. All were in different chacras (out in the country!). Francisca’s brother finally agreed to send a message to Julian. After we waited for 4 hrs, Julian  arrived. He had hurried from his field                              (Andes Mountains approaching Huayllapampa) 4 kilometers away. He could not reach Francisca, because she was 9 kilometers away. We gave him the funds and info and left it with God and Julian to collect his family in order to travel the next day to Lima; to meet Gladys the following day for their Embassy appointment.

The evening of their appointment we waited with expectancy of whether the Embassy gave them VISAs or not. That night Gladys called and was so excited that Carolyn had difficulty understanding all her Spanish. Carolyn learned that the VISAs were granted but knew she had missed most of the story and asked Gladys to write it down in an e-mail. The following is the letter that Gladys sent that night:

Hello Carolina,

I have to say, that the evil one was ashamed today, because to see that for moments the things seemed that they would not result, the Lord was with us. At 8 in the morning, Julián called me from Ancón and I asked him to take a taxi to the Barranca Tourism terminal, in the University Park, the place they already knew. The terminal has two doors that are on opposite streets. I went from one to another and tried to find two people and a boy and nothing. Already it was 10 am and they did not arrive, I knew that at that hour the traffic in the highways is very heavy.

It came to my mind Philippians 4:4 and instead of worrying me, I said: "Lord, how is it that you are resolving this situation?" I called to my house and Julián had just called saying where he was and thus I could find them. Then he remained in the terminal and I walk with Francisca and the boy some blocks for the photos, but in the first store that we found the photos would be ready by 1:30 in the afternoon, we sought another and they delayed only a half an hour.

Then in a taxi we went to the hotel, they gave me the documents and I told them how all would be and that to every question always we should respond with the truth. They descended to have lunch in the same hotel and I went to my house to get my documents.

I asked Julián to remain in the hotel because the procedure would take us some three hours and the instruction says that only the applicants of visa may enter. We arrived at the embassy at 12:50pm and when passed the youth that revises the passports and tickets of payment, he asked us for the dad of Eisten and as he was not there, he said that he could give us another appointment to present us another day, I told him that we could call him, and he accepted that.

Then I called my sister, so she went to the hotel and helped him to take the taxi. Julián arrived at approximately 1:30 (the time of the appointment). When we were inside, approaching the place to wait, before entering exactly to the offices of the section consular, we saw some 50 people or more that already were waiting before us, but, I read this notice: "Only for applicants of visa" and I stopped because Julián was with us.

I approached then the young woman that calls one by one those that are waiting, I explained to her who Julián was, why he was with us and they gave us direct passage inside and we did not have to stay in the waiting area. Inside, there were many people, the parlor was full and when we were called, the consul was very, very kind, she was like an angel.

The interview lasted a long time, asking many questions to each one of us and reading and reading again each document. Possibly, when I had my folder open, she saw a document with the logo of the Fulbright that I had not presented because I believed that all was sufficient for the type of visa that I had declared in the form, and she told me "I believe that there is a document of a Fulbright Scholar in your folder." I gave it to her, she read it, and went inside carrying two documents more. When she returned she told us that the mother and son would be given a visa for three months and if it was necessary to extend it, being there in the States, the hospital would know how to ask an extension of the visas and said that a visa for ten years would be given to me. I only had asked the Lord for a visa of three months as the surgeries were supposed to take, maybe, six weeks, but God gives plenty and "new are HIS mercies each morning".

The family wanted to return that same night to Barranca and in the office of DHL they permitted me to collect the three passports. Already we had spoken before with them, it is good always to respect the regulations, and I will go and return with the three, the day that is planned for us.

At that point, I was no longer a stranger to them and when we returned to the hotel they declared to me how grateful they are to the Hocutts. Then I began to say that it was God who had done all through you. Julián told me that Pentecostals were in his village and therefore he did not want to be committed with the church, but that yes he believed in God. I was able to share with them the gospel of salvation and explained to them that the commitment is with God, that it is not the church that saves, etc, etc. In the end, I believe that in their heart they wanted to accept Jesus, because the eyes of Julián were filled with tears. Both Julián and Francisca accepted Jesus as their personal Savior!

Glory to God!

Thanks and Blessings, Gladys

Now, all we were waiting on was flight information which Bell Shoals acquired. Once we had this info in hand we made our last trip to Huayllapampa on Wednesday, 29 October. (Carolyn had called earlier, asking them to meet us.) Once in town, Julian took us to their home where Francisca had prepared lunch. We talked, gave final instructions, and then asked if they were ready to go to Huaraz with us. They said Eisten was in the chacra and would not be home till night. Re-organizing plans, we left them with all info and prayed, asking God to take care of them and get them to Lima on time for the flight Friday night, 31 October.

Gladys, being informed of the schedule, awaits them in Lima, ready to go. Pray for them as the 3 are in the States, for Eisten’s surgery, and for Julian and family members back home.

Pray for us to have wisdom as how to reach their village for Christ. It is a 4 hour trip, one way, for us. We need to hear from God and work according to His plans!

This was an unusually long newsletter. Thank you for reading and praying on our behalf.

The simple truth is that we could not be here without your gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering each year. Those gifts are the means by which we devote ourselves to full-time ministry, providing us with a place to call home, food, medical care – even schooling for our children.

It is both a humbling and exhilarating experience to live life dependent on the faithfulness and generosity of God through Southern Baptists. Thank you! Please know that many people around the world (including Julian and Francisca) will truly celebrate Christmas for the first time this year because of your sacrifice for God’s Kingdom.                                             (Francisca in her kitchen)

November will seem rather slow in comparison to these past few months. In October we

had another medical team working out of Chiquian. They reached two communities, Aquia and Racrachaca/Pacarenca, where new churches will begin soon. Also, Keith has his administrative duties. We will make several trips to Chiquian and Chavin, checking on missionaries there. Carolyn and Joshua will continue with school. Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated at our house by many in our area. Give praises to God for bringing Joshua to a saving relationship with Jesus on 21 October (through his phonics class!!!!!!)!

"Thank You, God, for Your presence always with us!"

Keith, Carolyn, and Joshua Hocutt
